What works better for lifting compared with cardio?

For lifting, many people like a cut that clears the thigh and does not bunch through squats, lunges, or leg press. For cardio, lighter fabric and a shorter length can feel easier to move in. If you mix both, go for a simple all-round pair before getting too fancy.

Should I buy my usual size of gym shorts or size up?

Keep your usual size first and pay attention to the waistband and seat. If the drawcord has to do all the work or the fabric pulls across the hips, go up a size. If the waist slips and the leg openings look too roomy, go down. The right fit should feel easy, not sloppy.
